Katie Couric Documentary ‘Under The Gun’ Weighs The Scales Of Second Amendment Debate – Sundance

“We wanted this feeling of those empty chairs signified how many people would be lost to gun violence in the course of watching this movie,” said Katie Couric about her new documentary Under The Gun, which examines the battle between those who favor stricter gun laws and staunch Second Amendment supporters. The film marks the second time for Couric and Under The Gun director Stephanie Soechtig at Sundance; their previous title in Park City was the 2014 doc Fed Up, which focused on America’s obesity epidemic.

Soechtig and Couric’s aim with Under The Gun was to come to an understanding on how both sides of the gun debate think in the wake of such tragedies as Sandy Hook and the Aurora theater shooting. “We have to at least understand everyone’s position to figure out if there’s a common ground,” Couric told me. Upcoming screenings for Under The Gun are on January 30 at the Temple Theatre and January 31 at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center.
