Russian And Chinese Media Giants Team Up To Make Multi-Platform Content Pact

Russia’s Gazprom-Media and China’s Shanghai Media Group, two of the biggest media players in the two countries, have inked a pact that covers collaboration on the production and distribution of content across film, TV and digital. Gazprom-Media, fuelled by the Russian energy giant Gazprom, includes the media assets NTV and TNT TV channels as well as leading film company Central Partnership. The state-owned Shanghai Media Group controls over a dozen radio stations, TV channels and pay TV networks and publications. It also has a strategic relationship with Disney that includes the co-production of films and development of TV shows.

“Negotiations have focused on TV series, documentaries, full-length feature and animated films. We have already put together an offer of 300 feature films for the first phase of cooperation with Shanghai Media Group. China is preparing their part of the proposal,” said Dmitry Chernyshenko, general director of Gazprom-Media, in an interview with Russian news agency TASS.

Gazprom-Media has been deepening its media ties with China. In October last year, Central Partnership inked a deal with China Film Group, the Middle Kingdom’s largest distributer with Central providing Russian films for the Chinese market, and China Film Group offering Chinese films for the Russian market.

Russia and China are also forging stronger political ties after decades of lukewarm relations.
