‘Morris From America’ & ‘Weiner’, ‘Life, Animated’ Producers Win Sundance Institute Producer’s Awards

The Sundance Institute has today announced that Morris From America producers Sara Murphy and Adele Romanski, and Julie Goldman, executive producer of the documentary Weiner and producer of Life, Animated, have received the 2016 Amazon Studios Sundance Institute Producer’s Award. Through the Sundance Institute Feature Film Program, the award recognizes “bold vision and a commitment to continuing work as a creative producer in the independent space,” and offers grant money to an emerging producer of a Sundance Film Festival picture.

The award is continued good news for Morris From America. The coming of age pic about a young Hip Hop fan from the states who moves with his father to Germany received a very warm welcome after its premiere this weekend, with some viewers calling it an Oscar-shoo in next year. On the heels of that reception, the film was acquired by A24 earlier today. Weiner has also been getting a lot of buzz and controversy this past week. Chronicling former congressman Anthony Weiner’s failed bid to become Mayor of New York, it serendipitously captured his very public fall from grace owing to the “Carlos Danger” scandal. Life, Animated has meanwhile been praised widely for capturing the struggles of raising a child with autism.

Past award recipients include Stephanie Langhoff (The Bronze), Elisabeth Holm (Obvious Child), James Johnston & Toby Halbrooks (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints) and Josh Penn & Dan Janvey (Beasts of the Southern Wild). The award was announced at the annual Producers Lunch at the Sundance Film Festival.
