Norman Lear & Shonda Rhimes To EP Epix Docu-Series ‘America Divided’

All In The Family maestro Norman Lear is being honored this year at NATPE as a Brandon Tartikoff Legacy Award recipient, and Scandal creator Shonda Rhimes is being given the 2016 Norman Lear Achievement Award from the PGA on January 23. However, today Epix said the powerhouse producers are teaming for the first time for the documentary series America Divided.

“Epix is committed to presenting thought-provoking documentaries that deal head-on with hot-button topics that affect our society,” said the cabler’s president and CEO Mark S. Greenberg in a statement about the upcoming series, timed to the NATPE shindig opening in Miami. “America Divided is a nonpartisan investigation of the key issues shaping the presidential campaign, and we are confident our viewers will find each episode compelling and accessible.”

Featuring docus fronted by Common, Superstore’s America Ferrera, Baskets’ Zach Galifianakis and Amy Poehler among others, America Divided is set to debut in the fall. In addition to his gig behind the camera, Lear will front one America Divided piece on the housing crisis in New York and the inequality at play. “Foremost among the Founding Fathers’ promises was equality under the law,” said Lear about the series and his on- and off-screen role in it. “It’s up to us to help them keep their promise.”

Besides Lear and Rhimes, executive producers include Oscar winner Common, Solly Granatstein, Lucian Read and Richard Rowley. The latter trio created the series and will also direct episodes. RadicalMedia’s Jon Kamen, Justin Wilkes and Dave O’Connor are also EPs. Nicole Dow and Derek Dudley of Freedom Road Productions, and Norman Lear: Just Another Version Of You’s Brent Miller are co-EPs. Rebecca Teitel and Jesse Williams are senior producers with Abby Ellis and Leah Thomas as producers.

Greenberg, Jocelyn Diaz, Ross Bernard and Jill Burkhart are EPing for Epix.
