Judd Apatow Says ‘Freaks and Geeks’ Revival “Could Happen” For Streaming Service – TCA

While appearing at TCA this morning to talk about his new original series Love, one TV critic noted Netflix also likes to revive older TV franchises, and wondered if Apatow wanted to revive any of his – specifically Freaks and Geeks, the comedy-drama created by Paul Feig and Apatow that aired very briefly on NBC during the 1999-2000 TV season, and still has a cult following, making many Gone Too Soon-ish lists including Time magazine’s 100 Greatest Shows of All Time,  TV Guide’s 60 Greatest Dramas of All Time, etc.

All of those characters died in a super-max prison,” Apatow said, before adding, ” You never know. It could happen.”

“I think James Franco already has made a season and hasn’t told us yet,” he joked  – Franco being one of the short-lived series actors, joined by Seth Rogen and Jason Segel.

Apatow had another revival idea: “I did a pilot in 2001 called North Hollywood for ABC, an edgy groundbreaking comedy” conceived around the time Curb Your Enthusiasm was very popular. It starred Jason Segal, Amy Poehler and January Jones, he said, among others. “I don’t think any show has not been picked up faster. I’d like to  try to do that again, just to see what we would have to pay everybody.”
