‘Legion’ Eyes Series Pickup, ‘Louie’ Return Uncertain – TCA

As X-Men-themed pilot Legion is being cast, FX already is looking ahead to a series pickup. FX Networks CEO John Landgraf Saturday at TCA said that the potential series is penciled in for a potential launch later this year. Sets are being built and a writers room has been assembled, churning out scripts. While Landgraf cautioned that it is theoretically possible that production or other issues could derail a series pickup of the pilot when it’s completed, he stressed FX’s track record of taking the vast majority of its drama pilots to series, and was confident Legion would continue the trend. “I’m pretty optimistic about Legion,” Landgraf said. “The scripts are extraordinary.”

As for the storyline of Legion, from Noah Hawley, it will not follow the continuity of the films. “It takes place in a parallel universe,” Landgraf said. “The US government is in the early days of being aware of mutants, but not the public. I  don’t foresee any characters moving back and forth (between the movies and the series).”

Louis C.K. in LouieAs for comedy Louie, which is currently on indefinite hiatus, “I really don’t know” when it will return, Landgraf said. He shared that creator/star Louis CK recently told him that he had pulled out all unexecuted notes from previous seasons and “decided that at the moment, it’s not the right time to do another season.” Landgraf noted that CK has four other series going as a producer/co-creator, and he is embarking on a new standup tour.

“Maybe Louie is an odd show that he can do periodically throughout his life – in his 40s, 50s, 70s, 15 seasons over 40 years. I really don’t know.”

Asked if there is a possibility that we have seen the last of Louie, Landgraf said CK “hasn’t promised further seasons of it, so I have to say it’s a possibility.” Still, he said, he speaks regularly with CK, which is a good sign.

During the panel for new FX series Baskets, which CK co-created and executive produces, CK himself was asked by a reporter when his eponymous show may return, triggering an entertaining exchange with Baskets co-creator/star/ep Zach Galifianakis.

CK: “I Don’t know. I don’t know. I think about it sometimes. And I don’t know yet.”

Galifianakis: “How often do you think about it?”

CK: “I think about it every 48 days.”

Galifianakis: “Where are you in the cycle right now?”

CK: “It starts right now. She (the reporter) just reset the clock.”

Added CK, “Because this is such an autobiographical thing, I can presumably do a version of it when I’m 60, if anyone gives a s**t… or it may be I can do it next year. Maybe by the time I want to do it, I might say, ‘Hey guys,’ and they’ll be like, ‘Who is this?'”
