‘Prison Break’ Event Series Ordered By Fox, Wentworth Miller & Dominic Purcell Set To Return

Fox has given a formal straight-to-series order to Prison Break, a new event series that will serve as a followup to the cult 2005 Fox action series, the network said at TCA on Friday. The official pickup comes on the heals of original Prison Break stars Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell closing deals to return for the new installment, reprising their roles as brothers Michael Scofield and Lincoln Burrows. Fox originally announced the Prison Break revival in August when it ordered a script and a bible from series creator Paul T. Scheuring, who serves as writer/showrunner. The length of the event series has not been determined, I hear it is expected to be in the 8-10 episode range.

The original Prison Break centered on a young man (Miller) determined to prove his convicted brother’s (Purcell) innocence and save him from death row by hatching an elaborate plan to escape from prison.

Back in August, Fox TV Group chairman Dana Walden described it as “a bit of a sequel, picking up several years after the end of the series.” The new installment will largely ignore the straight-to-video finale, which saw the demise of Miller’s Michael, though the limited series will provide “a logical and believable explanation to why the characters are alive and still moving around the world,” Walden said at the time. “The brothers and some of the iconic characters will be back, and it will address some questions that were set up at the end of the series for a new audience,” she said. We will update with more comments from today’s Fox session.

The original series, which ran for four seasons, was a breakout in its first year and has been a big international seller for Fox sister studio 20th Century Fox, which produces it. 20th TV is back for the new installment along with the original producing team. That includes Scheuring, Neal Moritz, Marty Adelstein and Dawn Olmstead, who will all serve as executive producers.
