Caitlyn Jenner: Replace Ricky Gervais As Golden Globes Host, Take ‘Cait’ Global – TCA

Caitlyn Jenner says she had no choice but to be very public about her transition. “I have never really sought fame and all that kind of stuff — that is not me,” she told a ballroom full of reporters at TCA this afternoon. “The only thing I struggled with my whole life is finding inner peace, and I have found that.” But, she said, “I knew I had to do this publicly because I was getting trashed so bad” in the “tabloids.”

Raising her hand to eye level, she added: “I had to get it out of the gutter and put it up here. First of all: Diane Sawyer put it up here. She did so much to set the tone. Vanity Fair — classy magazine. Annie Liebovitz doing those pictures. After that, I haven’t done much: a small piece for Ellen DeGeneres and a small piece for Today show.”

E! said this morning that the second season of I Am Cait will debut Sunday, March 6, but had announced back in October it had picked up the reality series to a second season, following Jenner living her life as a transgender woman and advocate for the transgender community.

The “platform,” she said, “is not for me – it’s for this community. To be able to tell this story. And if my celebrity helps make it better for the next generation of trans people, baby, I’m all in.

“But, I’m the exception to the rule,”  she added. “I have seen nothing but love. I have been very blessed. But I know it’s not that way for so many people in this community.”

rs_1024x759-150730113629-1024-I-Am-Cait-Caitlyn-Jenner-JR-73015Jenner said that among the reasons she decided to do I Am Cait at E! was that her children star in Keeping Up With The Kardashians and she wanted to be able to show up for their birthday parties and other family events, which are recorded for their program, and to have them make appearances on her show, which her EP Andrea Metz today said we will see more of going forward.

In this season, Jenner and her “tribe” take a road trip, stating in Los Angeles and traveling to the Grand Canyon, Santa Fe, Tulsa, Chicago, Kansas City, New Orleans and other stops. Jenner said she’d like to take the show global next season, after meeting with the United States’ ambassador to the UN, Samantha Power, and learning in how many member nations a member of the LGBT community could be put in jail or executed for who they are.

Coverage of her first nine months as a trans woman has largely focused on her missteps, a reporter said, wondering what she’s “done right.” “I felt like I really opened up this conversation, that it’s OK to talk about trans issues. … All of a sudden it’s OK to talk about this issue.”

Speaking of DeGeneres and “missteps,” Jenner took hits back in September when she told DeGeneres, on her show’s season opener, in re gay marriage, “I’m a traditionalist. I’m older than most people in the audience. I kind of like tradition, and it’s always been a man and a woman. I’m thinking, ‘I don’t quite get it’.”  That was September 8. DeGeneres spoke about her surprise,  and her reaction, on Howard Stern’s radio show. On September 14, Jenner clarified: “after hearing from my gay friends and learning more about the hardships they faced because of discrimination, it became clear to me that everyone should be able to marry the person they love.”

Today, Jenner says she’s still a Republican, and did not want to “heavily get into politics” during her Q&A. But, she asked, “isn’t it good that” that trans women “have somebody on the team to go in there and change [Republicans’] minds? That’s how I look at it,” she said.

Asked to comment on Ricky Gervais’s Golden Globes jokes about her, Jenner said, “I think what I’m gonna do call is call the Golden Globes and see if they need a new host for next year.” At the Globes, returning host Gervais said, “I’ve changed,” but not as much as Jenner. “What a year she’s had. She became a role model for trans people everywhere, showing great bravery in breaking down barriers and destroying stereotypes” – except about women driver, Gervais snarked.
