Pop Orders ‘Traci From Nightcap’ Scripted Comedy Series Starring Ali Wentworth

In 2014, Pop acquired Canadian comedy Schitt’s Creek as the newly rebranded cable network’s first scripted series. Now Pop is making its second move in the original scripted space, with the 10-episode, straight-to-series order to Traci From Nightcap (working title), a 10-episode comedy set behind-the-scenes of a fictitious late-night talk show, entitled “The Night Cap With Jimmy.” It is executive produced by Tom Brunelle and Brad Wollack, who were executive producers and writers on Chelsea Lately’s E! late-night talk show Chelsea Lately.

Starring Ali Wentworth (In Living Color, Head Case), the series is produced by Lionsgate Television, whose parent company co-owns Pop with CBS. The studio is known for helping upstart original scripted players to establish themselves in the arena including AMC (Mad Men), Netflix (Orange Is the New Black), E! (The Royals), Hulu (Casual) and Epix, which the company also co-owns (the upcoming Graves).

Traci From Nightcap is described as an edgy, over-the-top, single-camera, culture-commentary comedy that will feature a mixed cast of improvisational actors and real-life celebrities. Each half-hour episode covers the hectic 22 minutes prior to a live airing of a late-night talk show. Wentworth will star as a talent booker on the fictional show.

“In the spirit of great workplace comedies in the world of broadcasting – from The Mary Tyler Moore Show to 30 Rock – we are excited to take viewers into Traci From Nightcap,” said Kevin Beggs, Lionsgate Television Group chairman.

Added Paul Adler, SVP Original Programming and Development at Pop. “Traci From Nightcap taps into this cultural phenomenon, while Ali’s comedic spirit and New York social scene connections will pave the way for an entertaining comedy that is sharp-witted, celebrity-fueled and engaging.”

Production on Traci, Pop’s second original scripted series, is scheduled to kick off in later this month in New York City. It will join Schitt’s Creek, which was renewed for a second season.

Traci From Nightcap is produced by Lionsgate Television, Dakota Pictures and Trout the Dog Productions. Wentworth, Tom Brunelle and Brad Wollack of Free 90 Media, Troy Miller (Deadbeat), and Lydia Tenaglia, Chris Collins and Craig Shepherd of Zero Point Zero Production serve as executive producers.

Wentworth is repped by ICM Partners and attorney Adam Kaller.
