ABC has ordered two comedy pilots created by former Friends writers: Speechless, from Scott Silveri and 20th Century Fox TV, and Pearl, from Andrew Reich and ABC Studios. Both projects are single-camera.
Speechless, originally set up at Fox last season with a put pilot commitment plus significant penalty, is about a family with a special-needs child described as being “good at dealing with the challenges it faces and excellent at creating new ones.”
20th TV-based Jake Kasdan (New Girl, Fresh Off The Boat) and Melvin Mar, who have been part of the project since the beginning, executive produce with writer Silveri who co-created NBC’s Perfect Couples.
Pearl, written/executive produced by Reich, centers on a larger-than-life family matriarch who, after she finds out she has cancer, becomes intent on controlling and orchestrating every aspect of her family’s life before she dies. Reich co-created ABC’s Work It.
Speechless and Pearl join ABC’s early pilot orders, Downward Dog, which just wrapped production, and the live-action/animated hybrid Imaginary Gary, which is casting.
