Ron Meyer & Donna Langley Praise Obama’s Gun Violence Executive Orders

The Hollywood chorus singing President Barack Obama’s praises got louder as NBCUniversal’s Vice Chairman and Universal’s Chairman put their names to a public letter on his recent attempts to curb gun violence in America. “Thank you,” said the January 8 letter signed by Ron Meyer and Donna Langley and over 100 other Hollywood types. “Thank you for having the courage and leadership to take Executive Action on preventing more unnecessary gun violence in this country,” adds the correspondence from the Brady Campaign and Center to Prevent Gun Violence (read it here). “We are deeply thankful for the actions you took this week. Countless lives will be saved as a result.”

While Obama’s Executive Orders of January 5 have received widespread support in heavily Democratic supporting Hollywood, Meyer and Langley, who put out the hit N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton last year, are the most highly positioned execs to come out publicly for the President. Not that the support is any big surprise – at least for Meyer. A frequent presence on the Hollywood fundraiser circuit, Meyer has made repeat appearances at Obama events and, with wife Kelly, was a big bundler for the President’s 2012 reelection. At the same time, the former CAA chief was among the co-hosts of a fundraiser for the GOP New Jersey Governor and 2016 hopeful Chris Christie at the LA home of hedge fund billionaire Steve Cohen in mid-December. Kelly Meyer also was among the over 770 people in total who have signed the Enough letter.

Other names signing the letter include Mad Men’s Jon Hamm, who is a strong contender for tomorrow’s Golden Globes, Orange Is The New Black star Taylor Shilling, and longtime Obama supporter Bradley Cooper. Spotlight stars Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo and John Slattery plus the Duplass brothers, Elizabeth Banks, The Big Short director Adam McKay and his Funny Or Die partner Will Farrell, Julianne Moore and Meyer’s son-in-law and Hillary Clinton fundraiser host Tobey Maguire also put their names on the letter.
