Kevin Reilly On New ‘Tales From The Crypt’ & End Of ‘American Idol’ -TCA

At Kevin Reilly’s first executive session as TNT and TBS president, he was asked for more details on the just announced Tales From The Crypt reboot shepherded by M. Night Shyamalan. “It will be an umbrella for many shows, a variety of different genre shows, all united under the Tales brand, some of which will have a weird sense of humor or frightening,” Reilly said of the new program, which will be hourlong. He noted that there are four properties already being looked at. Shyamalan will direct, most likely the first installment, Reilly said.

The TV series “definitely is going to utilize the underlying comics,” Reilly said, hinting that there is something in that direction already in the hopper for online.

With American Idol always a major part of Reilly’s previous TCA executive sessions as chairman of Fox, he was asked about the decision to end the long-running reality series, which kicked off its final season last night.

“Yes, now is definitely the right time,” Reilly said. “Idol was an extraordinary, one of a kind show, but it’s time for it to be over.”

As for his Fox tenure, “I really loved my Fox experience, but it certainly wasn’t fun the last two seasons.”
