Consumer Technology Association Chief Talks Up Drones, 3D Printers, And Driverless Cars: CES

Entertainment no longer drives the consumer electronics business, based on Consumer Technology Association chief Gary Shapiro’s opening remarks at the annual CES confab.

Drones, 3D printers, driverless cars, and wearable Web-connected devices led his list of this year’s hottest innovations.

On the convention floor in Las Vegas “you’ll see products that solve real world problems,” he says.

Although “we can never fully guarantee that the products we create won’t be used for evil,” he says that “we need governments to let the marketplace work.”

Entertainment won’t be forgotten this week, though. Companies plan to roll out 4K televisions, 4K Blu-ray players, virtual reality devices, and set top boxes that blend conventional TV with streaming services such as Netflix.
