PGA Vetting Process Leaves Some Producers Out In The Cold
The PGA’s vetting process for producers usually raises eyebrows for omissions because those submissions usually go onto Oscar hopefuls. Among the notable producers left off this year’s nominations list include Arnon Milchan on The Big Short, Paul Feig of The Peanuts Movie, a nominee in the Animation category.
In the Zanuck category, for example, The Big Short‘s named producers are Plan B’s Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner and Brad Pitt. Milchan, who was credited in the movie, did not make the PGA cut. However, Milchan was listed by the PGA as one of five producers on The Revenant, which Regency also helped to finance.
Two producers were missing from Sicario’s film credits and one each for Mad Max: Fury Road and The Martian. (See our full list below.)
Ex Machina has two producers — Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich — but the PGA says it’s still vetting. That could mean the sci-fi pic was a surprise vote-getter, or as one source noted that paperwork may have not been filled out properly.
Why are these credits important? Because the PGA Awards are a major indicator of what might be nominated for the Best Picture category in the Oscars. A win from the PGA is seen as a possible precursor to a Best Picture win in the Oscar ceremony, and of course that statuette is accepted by the winning film’s credited producers.
The PGA will announce their winners January 23. Voting closes for the Oscars on February 2, with those envelopes opened February 28.
Here are the list of producers who on the films who made the PGA cut:
