Christmas is the time for giving, and so it is that Fox is dropping a new sneak peek at its upcoming hard R-rated superhero pic Deadpool in our stockings. The second official trailer is set to air at some point during the ESPN NBA games scheduled on Christmas Day. To prime us, a teaser has been released and you can watch it here.
Normally, “trailers for the trailers” are an annoying slice of marketing overkill, but as with almost all Deadpool-related marketing, this teaser manages not only to be fun and funny by itself, it also pulls off the trick of actually advancing the basic premise. Here’s how: Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool sits in an easy chair reading a parody of T’was The Night Before Christmas about the upcoming trailer. Throughout, TJ Miller as Deadpool’s best friend Weasel keeps interrupting to snark, only at the end to realize Deadpool isn’t talking to him. In the comics, Deadpool is so insane he’s able to realize that he’s a comic book character and frequently addresses the reader. That fourth-wall breaking is supposed to be a big part of the film, now seemingly confirmed.
Meanwhile, Serbian actor Stefan Kapicic has been tapped to play the role of Colossus. Entertainment Weekly first reported the news. In the comics, Colossus, AKA Piotr Nikolaievitch Rasputin, is a longstanding member of the X-Men whose mutant power is the ability to transform his body into a powerful metallic shell. As revealed during the footage shown off last summer during the film’s Hall H presentation at Comic-Con, Colossus appears alongside Negasonic Teenage Warhead (played by Brianna Hildebrand) and will become an uneasy Deadpool ally. Motion capture performance was initially done by stuntman Andre Tricoteux, but Kapicic has reportedly filmed several scenes and has already recorded much of his dialogue.
Deadpool stars Ryan Reynolds, TJ Miller, Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, and Gina Carano along with Hildebrand and Kapicic. Tim Miller is directing from a script by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese. It hits theaters February 12.
