Oscars: ‘Star Wars’, ‘Jurassic World’ & ‘Ant Man’ Among Visual Effects Finalists

And then there were 10. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed its finalists for Best Visual Effects at the 88th Oscars. Among them are movies with three of the four biggest domestic opening weekends in history: Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Jurassic World and Avengers: Age of Ultron.

The other finalists are Ant-Man, Ex Machina, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, The Revenant, Tomorrowland and The Walk.

The Academy had released its shortlist of 20 films for the Visual Effects Oscar two weeks ago. Among the high-profile titles that missed this cut are Furious 7The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 and Spectre — all of which are among the 11 top-grossing films of 2015.

The Academy’s Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee picked the shortlisted films. Members of the VFX branch are invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the finalists on January 9. Members then will vote to nominate five films for final Oscar consideration.

Oscar nominations will be announced January 14, and the trophies will be doled out on February 28 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. ABC will air the ceremony.
