There were a number of winter finales on last night and football, football, and more football. The biggest game of primetime was, of course, Sunday Night Football on NBC. And if you are a New England Patriots fan then the 27-6 destruction of the Houston Texans must have felt good. Now back at the top of the AFC playoff chart, Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski and gang bumped up the NFL and NBC flagship show 14% in metered market results from the Pittsburgh Steelers’ similar big blowout 45-10 win over the Indianapolis Colts on December 6.
The 13.9/22 MM rating was not only up over last week’s nearish SNF low but matched last season’s Week 14 Patriots vs. San Diego Chargers game and was 9% above the comparable week in the fall of 2013. In non-adjusted fast nationals, last night’s easy Patriots’ win drew a 6.2/19 among adults 18-49 with 18.75 million viewers. That’s up 3% in the demo from what last week’s game, which was preceded by a rare Oval Office address from President Barack Obama, scored in fast nationals and down 7% from the final numbers the Steelers vs. Colts game pulled in. Last night’s fast nationals will see adjustments in the final numbers that, if those MM results are any indication, will pump it up over last week. So, with a result like last night, NBC will once again easily top the night in the key demo and in viewers.
As usual, CBS had football too, which lead to delays in a number of East Coast and Central time zones. With that 28-minute late start due to the Oakland Raiders battle against the Denver Broncos, the net’s numbers are all over the field, as usual, and tentative. As it stands, 60 Minutes got a 1.6/5, the winter finale of Madam Secretary had a 1.3/4, The Good Wife had a 1.1/3 and CSI: Cyber downloaded a 0.8/3.
Fox also had the NFL yesterday with the mega-draw of the Dallas Cowboys getting schooled 28-7 by the Green Bay Packers. The overrun from that game had the net’s night starting at 8 PM with The Simpsons (2.4/7) up a click from its December 6 show, which also had NFL overruns, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine (1.7/5) even with last week. Family Guy (1.7/5) was even with its 9:16 PM starting show of last week while an emotionally charged The Last Man On Earth (1.3/4) winter finale, the Fox show’s first, dipped 7% from its December 6 offering.
On a non-NFL ABC, it was the end of the trimmed Blood & Oil (0.7/2). Having never hit anything near a ratings gusher, the freshman fracking soap sputtered out last night with an all-time low. Even with that as its programming predecessor, the winter finale of lead-out and fellow freshman Quantico (1.3/4) actually rose. Maybe that’s what you get when you kill off a character, but with an 8% bop up in the key demo over last week, the Priyanka Chopra-starring FBI drama hit its best numbers since October 25. The early part of ABC’s night saw America’s Funniest Home Videos (0.9/3) up 29% from last week, almost entirely making up what it had lost from its November 30 show on December 6. A special Behind The Magic: Snow Wives And The Seven Dwarfs (0.7/3) in Once Upon A Time’s 8 PM slot was soft.
