Luc Besson Announces That Herbie Hancock Is Joining ‘Valerian’

After taking to Instagram last weekend to announce that Ethan Hawke was joining the cast of the sci-fi epic Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, director Luc Besson has posted an item that multi-Grammy winning jazz musician Herbie Hancock will have a role in the feature adaptation of the French 1967 graphic novel series by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières.

On Instagram Besson wrote, “Herbie Hancock is a legend. His music was my only friend at 14… I learn so much listening this genius…
I’m proud to have him for a role in#Valerian .”

Hancock, who won an Oscar for his original score to Bertrand Tavernier’s 1986 ‘Round Midnight, has a handful of acting credits including a notable turn as Eddie Wayne in that film. ‘Round Midnight starred real-life jazz legend Dexter Gordon as a fictional tenor sax player on the rocks in the 1950s New York jazz world. Hancock has also appeared on the Disney Channel show Girl Meets World as Catfish Willie Slim.

To date, the cast for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets includes Dane DeHaan, Cara Delavingne, Ethan Hawke, Clive Owen, and Rihanna. Hancock is repped by Paradigm, Redlight Management and Melinda Murphy. EuropaCorp’s RED distribution label is releasing Valerian on July 21, 2017.
