Sony Weaves ‘Gamechangers’ Video Series Inspired By ‘Concussion’

In advance of the Christmas Day release of Concussion, Sony Pictures and millennial-focused media company Woven Digital have partnered for #Gamechangers, a three-video series inspired by the film that will showcase ordinary people who made a difference despite significant adversity. The series launches today on, Facebook and YouTube, with the second episode debuting December 16 and the final one appearing on December 18.

Each episode of #Gamechangers will focus on a different individual’s efforts. The premiere episode follows the story of Rachel Sumekh, a UCLA student who discovered the school was turning a profit from unused swipes on student meal cards. She waged a successful campaign to convince UCLA to allow students to donate their extra meals to the homeless around Los Angeles. After 300 meals were collected in a single week, Sumekh formed the group Swipe Out Hunger, which has grown to more than 13,000 students in 26 chapters nationwide, with in excess of 300,000 meals delivered to the needy.

Concussion is really a story about how the impact of opposing forces can spark great change and how one man, Dr Bennet Omalu, made a difference against insurmountable odds,” said Dwight Caines, President of Theatrical Marketing for Sony’s Columbia TriStar wing. “We are thrilled to tell the inspiring stories of real people who in their own way changed the game for good.”

Will Smith stars in Concussion as Omalu, the Nigerian forensic pathologist who was the first to publish findings that American football players were suffering from a high rate of the progressive degenerative disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Facing heated resistance from the NFL, it took seven years before the league acknowledged that the problem stemmed from multiple concussions inflicted on football players during normal play.

Concussion was written and directed by Peter Landesman, based on the GQ article “Game Brain” by Jeanne Marie Laskas. From Columbia Pictures in association with LStar Capital and Village Roadshow Pictures, it’s produced by Ridley Scott, Giannina Scott, David Wolthoff, Larry Shuman and Elizabeth Cantillon and executive produced by Michael Schaefer, David Crockett, Ben Waisbren, Bruce Berman and Greg Basser.
