EXCLUSIVE: Grindstone Entertainment Group has acquired U.S. distribution rights to online dating comedy Casual Encounters. Saturday Night Live’s Taran Killam stars as Justin, whose longtime girlfriend leaves him heartbroken and embarrassed after a public breakup. With the help of his somewhat misguided friends, he enters into the strange world of online dating, where things get weird. When he thinks he’s found Miss Right “offline,” his cyber escapades turn around to bite him. Helmed by Zachary Adler, the film also stars Brooklyn Decker, David Krumholtz, Mark Boone Jr and David Arquette. “The cast we put together was a group of comedic geniuses, so I allowed them the creative freedom to run with it,” Adler said. “The main directorial challenge was to tell the story and serve the script while letting the most hilarious, albeit often impromptu, comedic bits shine through.” Lionsgate Home Entertainment is handling distribution for the film produced by Cole Payne, Roger M. Mayer and Traverse Media, who handled the financing and production. Carnaby International is handling worldwide sales.
FilmRise has acquired the exclusive rights in all media for Gored, the bullfighter documentary that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in April. Director Ido Mizrahy’s Spanish-language film centers on Antonio Barrera, the most-gored bullfighter in history, whose bovine adversaries’ horns have found him on 23 occasions — and his wife has witnessed 18 of them. Beginning his final faceoff, the aging toreador is torn between his role as a father and husband and his final chance at bullfighting glory. “Ido Mizrahy has created a thrilling and thought-provoking sports documentary that goes beyond bullfighting to address themes that we can all relate to: survival, determination, and family,” said Danny Fisher, CEO of FilmRise. The docu from Motherlode Films and Roopstigo will be available on digital platforms including iTunes, Amazon and Netflix throughout North America, Latin America, Spain and the United Kingdom. FilmRise also will distribute it on DVD and Blu-ray. The deal was negotiated between Fisher and Max Einhorn, VP Acquisitions at FilmRise, with Steven Beer of FWRV.
