‘Grace And Frankie’ Prepping Third Season For Netflix

Grace And Frankie has yet to air its second season next year, but we’ve learned that the Netflix comedy series has been given an unofficial green light for a third. Pre-production on Season 3 already is underway.

The second-season renewal of Grace and Frankie came in May, 2 1/2 weeks after the series debuted and shortly after Miley Cyrus endorsed it on Twitter, prompting co-creator Marta Kauffman to quip, “We have (Netflix’s) Ted (Sarandos) and Miley to thank.”

Grace and FrankieWhile Netflix does not disclose viewership data, Grace And Frankie, starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston, is believed to be among the streaming service’s most popular original series. Putting the show on accelerated production schedule is not entirely surprising given the age of its A-list cast. TV Land did the same with its flagship comedy Hot In Cleveland, headlined by 93-year-old Betty White, which produced 126 episodes in less than five years.

Co-creators and executive produced by Friends co-creator Kauffman and Howard J. Morris, the series, which recently wrapped production on Season 2, centers on Grace (Fonda) and Frankie (Tomlin), whose lives suddenly are turned upside down when their husbands (Sheen, Waterston) reveal they are gay and leave them for each other. Brooklyn Decker co-stars, along with Ethan Embry, Baron Vaughn and June Diane Raphael.

Tomlin this morning earned a Golden Globe nomination for her role, adding to her Emmy nom this year. She was a double nominee, also in contention on the film side for Sony Classics’ Grandma.

Grace And Frankie is produced by Skydance Television, with Paula Weinstein, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Marcy Ross, Fonda and Tomlin also executive producing.
