‘Taraji & Terrence’s White Hot Holidays’ Ratings Solid, ‘Criminal Minds’ Rises

One week after the Lee Daniels-Danny Strong blockbuster had its winter finale, Empire addicts got some relief last night with Taraji And Terrence’s White Hot Holidays (1.5/5). While obviously nowhere near the ratings highs of the hip-hop drama, the hourlong special saw not just the Empire leads but onscreen sons Bryshere Y. Gray and Jussie Smollett as well as Mary J. Blige, John Legend and Patti LaBelle take the stage to belt out those Christmas tunes. All of which led to a solid result for the special produced by Casey Patterson Entertainment and Don Mischer Productions. With 5.08 million viewers, White Hot Holidays did fine for anything on broadcast, be it a holiday special or not.

Not having to face Empire in the 9 PM time slot, Criminal Minds (1.9/6) saw a 19% rise among adults 18-49 0ver last week. That’s the best the procedural has done in the demo and viewers (9.22 million) since its Season 11 debut on September 30. The rest of CBS’ night was steady but a bit mixed with the penultimate Survivor (2.3/8) of the season up 9% from its December 2 show and the 10 PM Code Black (1.4/5) dipping 6%. The net won the night with a 1.9/6 rating and 9.11 million viewers.

The Season 4 winter finale of Arrow (1.0/3) unsurprisingly was down from the high of last week’s second annual crossover with The Flash. Week-to-week, the WBTV series was down 28% to around its season averages. Midseason finale to midseason finale, last night’s Arrow was pretty steady with its Season 3 winter ender of December 10, 2014, with a 9% slip. Deprived of that crossover bounce, lead-out Supernatural (0.7/2) was down 22% from its December 2 show.

The top show of the now-Empireless Wednesday night was Modern Family (2.6/8) with the veteran comedy bopping up 8% over last week. Fellow ABC comedies The Middle (2.0/7) and The Goldbergs (2.0/7) were even with their December 2 offerings, while 9:30 PM’s Black-ish (1.7/5) rose 6% in the demo. The midseason finale of 10 PM’s Nashville (0.8/3) saw an 11% drop from last week. In fast national results, that’s a series low for the Music City set show, though Nashville does sometimes see adjustments in final numbers so…

NBC had a repeat of Mat Franco’s Got Magic (0.9/3) and a soft The Illusionists (0.9/3) special on last night.
