USA Developing Docu-Style Crime Drama ‘8 Years Lost’ From Blumhouse TV

Jason Blum’s Blumhouse shook up the movie genre business with its micro-budgeted found footage pic Paranormal Activity. Now the company is looking to employ the documentary style on the drama series side with 8 Years Lost. The project, written by married writing duo Lauren MacKenzie & Andrew Gettens (Elementary) is in development at USA Network through Universal TV, stemming from Blumhouse TV’s first-look production agreement with NBCUniversal.

Conceived to look and feel exactly like a true crime documentary, 8 Years Lost, which drew considerable network interesttells the haunting story of Jayna Beckner, a teenage girl who went missing in 2007 and whose body is discovered eight years later. When we learn these remains were just a few weeks old the mystery deepens– where has Jayna been all this time? And why was she killed now?”

The USA brass knows MacKenzie and Gettens from their work on the network’s recent series Complications. The duo also recently wrote for A&E The Returned and just joined the staff of CBS’s American Gothic after rising from a staff writer to a producer level over the past year. MacKenzie and Gettens are repped by UTA and the Shuman Co.
