‘Point Break’s China World Premiere Is First Of Its Kind – Photos

point break china posterEXCLUSIVE: Earlier tonight local time, Beijing was the host city for the world premiere of Point Break from DMG Entertainment, Alcon Entertainment and Warner Bros. This is the first time that a global launch of a Hollywood title has taken place in the Middle Kingdom. The movie, directed by Ericson Core, is making further history in China when it opens on Friday, a full three weeks ahead of the U.S. That gives it the final non-Mandarin-language slot before the December blackout descends and makes Point Break the first major studio-affiliated motion picture to release there with such an advance on domestic. Penguins Of Madagascar bowed 12 days before the U.S. in 2014 and Iron Man 3 opened in China two days before its Stateside debut in 2013.

DMG was partnered with Disney/Marvel on Iron Man 3 and held a gala event ahead of the opening in China back in 2013, but the premiere was in LA. At the time, the Beijing event was the first of its kind held inside Beijing’s Taimiao Temple in the Forbidden City.

Tonight’s event (see photos above and below) brought star Luke Bracey to town and featured customized stages that mimicked stunts and locations from the film, an update of Kathryn Bigelow’s 1991 classic. The production filmed extreme stunts in the areas of big-wave surfing, wingsuit flying, sheer-face snowboarding and free rock climbing in Switzerland, Venezuela, Hawaii and the Italian Alps. The Beijing bow followed a concerted local marketing effort by DMG that included trailers, featurettes and other promotional content over the past six months.

The early release in China (and elsewhere in Asia) should bring Point Break a strong opening and gives the movie about two weeks before anticipated local title The Ghouls wafts in. It also widens the space between it and Star Wars: The Force Awakens which is unleashing beginning December 16 everywhere else. Warner releases PB Stateside on Christmas Day and also has the UK, Russia, Japan and Latin America. Lionsgate for Alcon is handling the rest of the world.
