‘The Walking Dead’ Opening Credits Reveal Fan Fave [Spoiler] Is Back Tonight

SPOILER ALERT: This story contains details of tonight’s episode of The Walking Dead.

In its penultimate episode of 2015, the AMC blockbuster tonight ended the debate over the fate of Steven Yeun’s Glenn Rhee character for now – and perhaps signaled a new meaning for the term “dumpster diving.”

From the opening minutes of tonight’s David Boyd directed “Heads Up”episode of The Walking Dead, Glenn is revealed to be very much alive and Yeun’s name is back in the credits after several teasing weeks. However, as #GlennLives, #GlennIsAlive or something like it now explodes on Twitter and as glad as TWD fans will undoubtedly be to see Yeun’s Glenn back, they might be a tad incredulous over how he is shown to have actually survived.

On TWD’s October 25 show, the long time character was seen to have being knocked off a dumpster into a mass of frenzied Walkers by the falling body of suicide of Michael Traynor’s Nicholas. That same night on a note from showrunner Scott Gimple was read out on aftershow Talking Dead cryptically explaining that “in some way, we will see Glenn, some version of Glenn or parts of Glenn again, either in flashback or in the current story to help complete the story.”

Confirming rumors that popped up online the past few days, the beginning of the tonight’s episode clearly shows that Nicholas’ body fell on top of Glenn’s and was actually the only one being ravaged by the frenzied Walkers. Covered in blood and perhaps protected by it, Rhee scuttles under the dumpster for what seems to be at least a day. Remarkably,  the former pizza deliveryman avoids the reach of the walkers and waits until they leave before crawling out. No indication if that was his voice Norman Reedus’ Daryl Dixon heard crying “help” on the walkie talkie last week.

Still we could learn more later as usually reticent TWD executive producer Gale Anne Hurd is scheduled to be on Talking Dead tonight with a mystery guest or two, which could mean Yeun. Regardless of how much they give away or who shows up, the 11 PM ET starting aftershow will of course discuss the return of the core character from the zombie apocalypse series’ very first episode of its very first season.

The fact is Glenn’s fate was been one of much speculation for months, even before the dumpster fall of last month, due to the fact that he dies in the Robert Kirkman comics on which the series is based. With his wife Maggie pregnant, as was revealed on TWD last week, Rhee is killed in the comics by the Negan character. Now yes, the TV series has often deviated from the comics, but former Extant co-star Jeffrey Dean Morgan was recently named as playing Negan in Season 6 of TWD the TV series. Which makes us ask, is tonight a case of Glenn lives – for now?
