‘Scandal’ Ratings & Most Winter Finales Down From 2014, ‘The Player’ Ends Up

There were sacrifices, bold moves, Christmas parties and cliffhangers all over the shop as Thursday’s primetime saw the winter finales of several shows and one player cashed in its chips for good.

On ABC it was all Shondaland as usual and it was all winter finales as Grey’s Anatomy (2.5/8), Scandal (2.4/8) and How To Get Away With Murder (2.3/8) wrapped up their 2015. All three of the Shonda Rhimes produced series saw rises of 14%, 9% and a strong 21% from the steadiness of last week among adults 18-49. However, compared to their 2014 winter finales – well, it wasn’t as good. While Grey’s saw a bop up of 4% among the demo from that November 20 night, Scandal and HTGAWM fell 23% and 26%.

Still with a night of multi-week highs for the shows and Grey’s the highest rated non-football inflated offering of the night, ABC took the top spot on Thursday with a 2.4/8 among adults 18-49.

Sleepy Hollow (0.8/2) took a very dramatic turn last night in its narrative for its Season 3 winter finale and saw an 11% decline from its November 12 show. Year-to-year, the Fox fantasy procedural tumbled 43% among the 18-49s from its Season 2 winter finale of November 24 last year, which was a Monday not a Thursday. Opening the night for Fox, Bones (1.0/3), which did not have a winter finale last night, was down a tenth from last week.

CBS had a full schedule on Thursday but with local affiliates playing the Tennessee Titans 13-19 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, the nets numbers are obviously inflated and tentative at best. As it is, here is how CBS shows, all of which are up, did: The Big Bang Theory (3.8/13), Life In Pieces (2.0/7), Mom (1.8/6), 2 Broke Girls (1.9/6) and Elementary (1.0/3).

After a rough night last week, Heroes Reborn (1.1/4) remained even with the near low for the event miniseries. The winter finale of lead-out The Blacklist (1.5/5) also saw the thriller even with its November 7 show, which was the best it has done since its Season 3 premiere on October 1. The James Spader starrer was not so steady with its Season 2 Winter finale of November 10, 2014, which was a Monday. Winter finale to winter finale, this year took a 40% fall among adults 18-49. Ending NBC’s night and ending its ratings challenged run, freshman The Player (0.8/3) tied up some loose ends plotwise and saw a 14% rise ratingswise.

The CW had a mixed result on Thursday with The Vampire Diaries (0.5/2) down 17% and The Originals (0.4/1) even with its November 12 show.
