Univision Promotes Isaac Lee To New Role As Chief News And Digital Officer

This is a bump up for Isaac Lee, a Colombia-born journalist who had been Univision Communications’ President of News and Digital as well as CEO of Fusion, a 50-50 joint venture with Disney created in 2012 to develop English-language news and lifestyle TV and digital content.

Isaac LeeIn his newly created role as Chief News and Digital Officer, Lee will keep those responsibilities. He’ll also pick up oversight of Multicultural (which includes El Rey, Flama and The Root) and develop what the company calls “an integrated music strategy” involving Univision’s live events and radio programming. He’ll still report to CEO Randy Falco.

The promotion “is a testament to [Lee’s] visionary leadership and tremendous success and underscores how UCI is constantly evolving to meet and exceed the demands of our community, especially digitally-connected millennials,” Falco says.

Some of the operations that Lee will oversee represent the Latino-focused company’s effort to diversify its audience. For example, The Root, an online destination acquired in May, targets African-American readers with news, opinion and culture.

Lee joined Univision in 2010 and has won multiple awards including a DuPont, Peabody, IRE and National Headliner Award for investigative journalism. Earlier he created and edited Poder, a pan-regional magazine that partnered with The Economist to target elite business readers. He also is on the board of Legendary Entertainment as well as ProPublica, the Committee to Protect Journalists, the International Center for Journalists, and the Peabody Advisory Board.

Earlier this year, Univision filed documents at the SEC that could clear the way for it to go public. Univision and Deadline parent PMC partnered last year to create a digital entertainment operation, Variety Latino.
