The Fox stations will try out another syndicated TV show from TMZ Studios and Telepictures. The station group has set an 8-week preview of TMZ Studios and Telepictures’ celebrity-themed game show South of Wilshire, executive produced by Harvey Levin. It will begin Jan. 4 on selected Fox O&Os, including the top two markets New York and Los Angeles. The Fox stations, which already carry two TMZ-branded syndicated celebrity-driven shows, TMZ on TV (aka TMZ) and TMZ Live, usually test run prospective new syndicated shows in the summer. They are now opening a new test window in January.
Set in the Crenshaw District of L.A. with Dulan’s soul food restaurant is home base, in South of Wilshire contestants watch videos shot in Compton, Inglewood, Baldwin Hills and other areas where celebs hang out … restaurants, bars, churches, tattoo parlors, gyms, basketball courts and other venues. Three contestants at Dulan’s guess the identity of the celebs from clues provided by owners and customers at the locations and play for money as the audience dines on soul food. In the final round, a celebrity, whose identity is disguised, gives the clues about him/herself.
Frank Cicha, SVP, Programming, Fox TV Stations called South of Wilshire “interesting and different, within a sustainable economic model.” Outside of the traditional summer testing period, the station group previously tried out a new syndicated show in November. This marks its first January test. “Extending the original series strategy beyond summer is also a plus,” he said. “And, it will give us something to talk about at NATPE.”
Levin executive produces with Ryan Regan. “The show is super fun,” Levin said. “It’s impossible not to play along, and just watching the people at Dulan’s and the videos are entertaining as hell.”
In addition to TMZ and TMZ Live, TMZ Studios also has TMZ Sports, which recently debuted on Fox Sports 1.
