‘Disaster!’ Musical Gets Star-Powered Move To Broadway

A goofy off-Broadway hit from 2012 that repurposes ear-worm music (“Alone Again (Naturally)” and cheesy plots from 1970s movies and TV (The Poseidon Adventure, Towering Inferno, etc.) , Seth Rudetsky’s Disaster! is baaa-aack, having booked Broadway’s Nederlander Theatre and a first-class cast of Tony winners and nominees led by Roger Bart (The Producers) and Faith Prince (Guys & Dolls). The show will begin performances February 9, 2016 and officially open March 8.

Here’s how the producers describe the show:

Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the theatre comes Broadway’s new musical comedy Disaster! Earthquakes, tidal waves, infernos and rampant wildlife can’t stop an outrageous cast of characters from dancing, gambling and singing the night away aboard New York’s first floating casino and discothèque. Disaster! features some of the most memorable pop, rock and disco hits of the 1970’s, including “Hot Stuff,” “I Am Woman,” “Knock On Wood,” “Daybreak” and more.

In addition to Bart and Prince, the cast includes Kerry Butler (Xanadu), Kevin Chamberlin (The Addams Family), Adam Pascal (Rent), Rachel York (Victor/Victoria and the recent revival of Grey Gardens), Seth Rudetsky (SiriusXM’s “Seth’s Big Fat Broadway”) and original cast members Jennifer Simard (The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee), Max Crumm (Grease) and Lacretta Nicole.

The book is by Rudetsky and director Jack Plotnick, with choreography by JoAnn M. Hunter (School Of Rock). Sets are by Tobin Ost (Newsies), costumes by William Ivey Long (pretty much everything great) and lighting by Jeff Croiter (Peter And The Starcatcher).

The producing team includes Robert Ahrens, Mickey Liddell/LD Entertainment, Hunter Arnold, James Wesley and Jim Burba & Bob Hayes in association with Katherine McGregor, Mary J. Davis and Stephen CuUnjieng.

Disaster! debuted at the Triad Theatre in January 2012 and moved St. Luke’s Theatre, where it had a long run and found a place on several “Best of 2013” lists.
