‘Straight Outta Compton’ Hits $200M Worldwide – Box Office

Universal Pictures and Legendary’s Straight Outta Compton today is crossing the $200 million threshold at the worldwide box office. It’s Universal’s seventh film to reach $200 million worldwide this year. Compton‘s current domestic gross is $161.1M, and international will reach $38.9M by the end of today’s business.

Directed by F. Gary Gray, the musical biopic about hip-hop trailblazers N.W.A opened August 14 domestically with $60.2M, the fifth-highest August debut ever — ahead of M. Night Shyamalan’s Signs ($60.1M), Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes ($54.8M) and G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra ($54.7M). The movie also beat the first weekends of summer 2015’s Ant-Man ($57.2M) and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation ($55.5M).

Among other domestic milestones, Universal noted that Straight Outta Compton scored the best R-rated August opening, topped the North American box office for three weeks n a row, is the top-grossing music biopic and is the highest-grossing film from an African-American director.

Straight Outta Compton began its international rollout at the end of August with No. 1 openings in the UK and Germany and held onto the top spot in its second weekends in both markets while performing well in others. It has four international markets including Russia on November 12 and Spain on November 13.
