‘World Series’ Ratings Hit 12-Year Game 5 Viewership High, ‘SNF’ Wins Night With 23M Viewers

UPDATE, 2:25 PM: The final scores are in, at least for one of the big games last night, and you have to call it a home run for Fox. With an audience of 17.2 million watching the Kansas City Royals beat the New York Mets 7-2 in Game 5 of the 2015 World Series, the net saw the highest Game 5 viewership since 2003. That Game 5 between the New York Yankees and the Florida Marlins snagged a crowd of 19.9 million. Let’s add some more history to that and note that the victory brought the Royals their first World Series since 1985.

Compared to last year’s World Series Game 5 between the Royals and the San Francisco Giants (a series the Bay Area team won), last night’s game was up 37% in total viewers. In the adults 18-49 demographic, Sunday’s winning game got a 5.1 rating, which was up 55% over last year’s October 26 game. The 2014 World Series went to seven games, with the final match-up getting a 6.6 rating on October 29 after what had been a record-low series. Up against the seven games of 2014, this year’s World Series bopped up 6% in total viewership — even with two fewer games.

Of course, the World Series wasn’t the only big sports event on the Big 4 — in fact, it wasn’t even the biggest. That crown went to Sunday Night Football and the Denver Broncos’ 29-10 win over the Green Bay Packers. With two undefeated teams taking each other on, last night’s SNF drew an 8.2 rating in the key demo with total viewership of 23.0 million. That’s up 8% in the demo from the the Carolina Panthers’ 27-16 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles last week. In total viewership, last night’s SNF rose 12% from last week’s game.

Compared to Week 8 of last season, last night’s Broncos-Packers game saw a rise of 22% in viewership. In fact, last night’s SNF was the most-watched Week 8 primetime NFL game since 23.3 million tuned in to watch the Vikings-Bears in 1993.

PREVIOUS, 8:36 AM: It was one of those nights where the drama was high and the action was heavy on television – and we don’t mean scripted TV. On the first day of daylight savings, NBC had the battle of the undefeateds on Sunday Night Football, while Fox saw the World Series come to an end with a victory by the Kansas City Royals.

In what has been a ratings winner for Fox, last night’s extra-inning Game 5 clincher for the Royals’ first World Series since 1985 got a 11.7/19 in metered market results. That’s down 23% from the 15.2/24 overnight rating of Game 7 of the 2014 World Series. That game saw the San Francisco Giants beat the Royals for the title on October 29 last year.

However, that last game of 2014 was an exception ratingswise for Fox on what had otherwise been a lackluster series full of lows. Compared to the 8.2/13 MM result of Game 5 of the 2014 World Series, last night’s Game 5 was up a strong 42%. In fact, Sunday was the best Game 5 World Series result since the 12.8/20 of 2009. In the final numbers, last year’s Game 5 drew a a 3.3/9 among adults 18-49, a big 20% fall from 2013. (For trivia buffs: the last time the World Series was settled in five games was in 2010, when the Giants beat the Texas Rangers 3-1 on November 1 that year to win the championship.)

Over five games, the 2015 World Series averaged a 10.1/17 in metered market results. That’s up 26% over 2014’s five game average and 11% over the seven games that last year’s series got. Sunday’s game on Fox also undoubtedly benefited from a pretty big and very close NFL game as a lead-in, with the Seattle Seahawks inching a 13-12 win over the Dallas Cowboys – a lot of eyeballs on those teams as always.

Speaking of the NFL, last night’s SNF on NBC saw two undefeated teams walk into the arena but only one leave. Payton Manning and the Denver Broncos topped the Green Bay Packers 29-10, and the highly promoted face-off scored a 14.3/22 in metered market results. That’s a rise of 5% over the 13.6/22 MM result of last week’s SNF, when the Carolina Panthers beat the Philadelphia Eagles 27-16. That October 25 game pulled in a 7.6/22 among 18-49s with a total viewership of 20.61 million in final numbers. Worth noting that there weren’t baseball playoffs on last Sunday, and The Walking Dead, that other big ratings draw of the night, aired a potentially pivotal episode.

ABC’s drama lineup was hit hard by the killer sports competition. Once Upon A Time (1.5) was down -6% from last week, hitting a series low in Live + Same Day. Blood & Oil (0.8) was down -11%, while freshman Quantico (1.2), already given a back episodic order, was down -20%.As for CBS, its numbers will be a bit all over the place Sunday as usual because of NFL overruns, in this case from the Oakland Raiders beating the New York Jets 34-20.
