‘The Grinder’ Gets Full-Season Order From Fox

Fox’s The Grinder has became the second new series this fall to get a Back 9 order, bringing its freshman run to a full-season 22 episodes. It joins ABC’s Dr. Ken. The Grinder, starring Rob Lowe, is one of two new Fox comedies toplined by 1980s heartthrobs, along with the John Stamos starrer Grandfathered. Both shows have done so-so in the ratings but have been well reviewed and are very well liked internally at Fox. (Grandfathered has done slightly better in the ratings, while The Grinder has had an edge in positive reviews.) The Grinder is fully owned by Fox, while Grandfathered is a co-production between ABC Studios and 20th Century Fox TV. Pickup conversation between Fox and ABC Studios are ongoing, with a back order for Grandfathered expected shortly. Stamos’ recent DUI charge is not believed to be an issue. Fox earlier this month gave both The Grinder and Grandfathered orders for 6 backup scripts.

The Grinder is the perfect combination of razor-sharp wit and relatable family dynamics — two hallmarks of successful comedies,” said Fox entertainment president David Madden. “The critics have embraced this original, fresh and funny show, and the talented cast – led by Rob Lowe and Fred Savage — have done such an incredible job infusing it with biting humor and heartfelt moments.”

Lowe stars as beloved TV lawyer Dean Sanderson (aka “The Grinder”), with Savage starring as his brother, Stewart. When his long-running hit series comes to an end, Sanderson finds himself at a crossroads in life and decides to move back to his small hometown, thinking he has the experience to take over his family’s law firm. Mary Elizabeth Ellis, William Devane and Hana Hayes co-star. Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul created the series and executive produce. Jake Kasdan directs and also executive produces.
