‘Ash Vs. Evil Dead’ Review: Bruce Campbell-Led Series A Bloody Good Time

It has become a constant complaint in some circles that reliance on big-screen and small-screen reboots and revivals is strangling originality. Well, trick and treat — Ash vs. Evil Dead is going to partially kill that idea.

Debuting on Halloween, the Starz series based on the Evil Dead movie franchise is, as my video review above Ash Vs Evil Dead Poster 2says, a blood-drenched relentless romp of horror that makes for a very fun ride on a Saturday night. With his trademark chainsaw, the jaw that will never die known as Bruce Campbell is back in the Ash Williams role he birthed in the first Evil Dead pic back in 1981, and Spider-Man director Sam Raimi is back as an EP here and helming the pilot of the 10-episode series.

With a behind-the-camera team of ED alum Robert Tapert as EP, Ivan Raimi as co-EP and new addition Craig DiGregorio as showrunner, plus Ray Santiago and Dana DeLorenzo as Campbell’s onscreen sidekicks, Ash vs. Evil Dead is a bloodier and funnier than the movies – and I’m a big fan of the movies.

starz-1-logoPart of that is the addition of the rather excellent Lucy Lawless as the mysterious and vengeful Ruby, who is determined to find out why the Deadites are back and what the long-under-the-radar Ash has to do with it. However, a big part is the always larger-than-life Campbell, who – even in a girdle – is really on fire here. It’s been a long time since the Burn Notice alum was the leading man, but with his truly rare gift of bravado, self-deprecating humor and penchant for bloody action, Campbell wonderfully leads the pack in Ash vs. Evil Dead.

Cut to the chase: If you want to inject some grown-up adrenaline into your pre-trick-or-treating on Halloween, check out Ash vs. Evil Dead – I think you’ll like it and be back for more gore.

In the meantime, check out my video review above and tell us what you think about the small-screen version of the low(ish)-budget movies.
