Hitler Pic ‘Look Who’s Back’ A Smash In Germany; Beta Boards Worldwide Sales – AFM

With David Wnendt’s Adolf Hitler satire Look Who’s Back proving a box office phenomenon in Germany, Beta Cinema is taking on international sales ahead of AFM. The big-screen adaptation of Timur Vermes’ bestselling novel that imagines the return of Hitler to modern-day Germany has garnered over 1 million admissions and $10 million in it first two weeks of release in the country alone. Producer Constantin Film replicated the Borat model, by thrusting its notorious central character played by unknown German actor Oliver Masucci into unsuspecting real-life situations in Germany.

The book, a publishing phenomenon selling 2 million copies in Germany alone, has proven a hot-potato subject across Europe. It has now been published in more than 40 countries

Wnendt (Combat Girls, Wetlands) is directing, with cast including Christoph Maria Herbst, Fabian Sawatzki and Katja Riemann. Producers are Christoph Mueller and Lars Dittrich; Oliver Berben and Martin Moszkowicz are exec producing. The movie is a co-production of Mythos Film and Constantin.

The story follows Hitler suddenly waking up on the site of his former bunker, now a residential area of Berlin, 70 years after his presumed demise. The war is over, his party is no more, Eva Braun is long dead and German society is now so multicultural he does not recognize it. But, against all the odds, Hitler begins a new career on television after he is mistaken for a brilliant comedian – even though he is indeed the genuine article and his intentions have not changed.
