First Look: ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ Feature Film Starts Shooting

As Deadline previously reported, Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders are re-teaming for a big screen adaptation of their classic TV comedy Absolutely Fabulous. The BBC and Fox Searchlight, who are co-financing and distributing, have released a first look image, which shows the girls toasting to the good life in their iconic roles as Edina and Patsy. Set in the worlds of fashion and PR, the original TV series debuted in 1992 to immediate acclaim and high ratings, going on to run for a total of six seasons, spread out over two decades.

In the feature version, Edina and Patsy are still oozing glitz and glamour, living the high life they are accustomed to; shopping, drinking and clubbing their way around London’s trendiest hotspots. Blamed for a major incident at an uber fashionable launch party, they become entangled in a media storm and are relentlessly pursued by the paparazzi. Fleeing penniless to the glamorous playground of the super-rich, the French Riviera, they hatch a plan to make their escape permanent and live the high life forevermore!

Mandie Fletcher directs from a script by Jennifer Saunders. Jon Plowman and Damian Jones produce with Steve Milne, Christian Eisenbeiss, Christine Langan, Nichola Martin, Jennifer Saunders, Dawn French, and Maureen Vincent serving as executive producers. DanTram Nguyen, Vice President of Production and Katie Goodson-Thomas, Director of Production will oversee the project for Fox Searchlight Pictures.

The film will shoot on location in the UK and the south of France for 7 weeks. A number of high profile cameos are expected.
