Glen Powell Enlists In ‘Sand Castle’; Diane Guerrero Joins ‘The Godmother’

Glen Powell has joined the fleet of Sand Castle, alongside Henry Cavill, Nicholas Hoult and Luke Evans. The Iraq War drama, directed by Fernando Coimbra (Netflix’s Narcos), is based on a screenplay by Chris Roessner that details his experience as a machine gunner in Iraq’s Sunni Triangle in 2003. The plot follows an American military unit on a mission repair a water system in the turbulent Iraqi village of Baqubah. Powell will play Sgt. Falvy, a tough-minded, fitness-obsessed, foul-mouthed soldier from the South part of the unit. Shooting is set to begin next month. Powell co-stars on Fox’s new series Scream Queens and is next up in Beyond Deceit, with Anthony Hopkins and Al Pacino, and Ride Along 2. Other recent credits include The Bad Guys, The Expendables 3 and the upcoming Everybody Wants Some from Richard Linklater. Powell is repped by CAA and Untitled Entertainment Management.

Diane Guerrero has been cast in The Godmother, helmed by Gerard Johnson. She joins Catherine Zeta-Jones, Oliver Martinez and John Leguizamo, in the pic based on the life of drug lord Griselda Blanco (Zeta-Jones). Set in the 1970s and ’80s, it tells the story of Blanco, deemed the “Godmother of Cocaine,” who went from an impoverished life to establishing a cocaine business with her husband in New York and becoming one of the most feared figures during the “cocaine cowboys” wars. Guerrero will play Eva, who worked as a mule for Blanco. Production begins November 4 in Puerto Rico. Guerrero, repped by Abrams Artists Agency and VamNation Entertainment, is best known for her role as Martiza Ramos in Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black and Lina on CW’s Jane The Virgin.
