‘I Am Cait’ Renewed For Season 2 By E!

E! has picked up a second season of its I Am Cait docu-series following Caitlyn Jenner living her life as a transgender woman and advocate for the transgender community. Season 2 of I Am Cait will premiere in 2016, the NBCU network just announced.

“Caitlyn’s story has ignited a global conversation on the transgender community on a scale that has never been seen before,” E1 EVP Jeff Olde said in this morning’s announcement. “We are honored Caitlyn has chosen to continue to share her ongoing story with our viewers around the world,” he said of the program that finished its first season in the top 5 across ad-supported cable for 2015 among women 18-34 and women 18-49, and in the top-10  with P18-49 and P18-34.

E! unveiled the first details of the groundbreaking series on April 24, after weeks of speculation. That night, ABC aired its highly anticipated two hour 20/20 interview with Jenner, who then went by the first name Bruce and was referred to by the media as male. “For all intents and purposes, I am a woman,” Jenner told Diane Sawyer during that dramatic interview, in which the Olympic star talked about starring in E!’s Keeping Up With The Kardashians while hiding  “the one thing that would really make a difference in people’s lives…right here in my soul. I couldn’t tell that story.”

Not coincidentally, it was during that interview, seen by nearly 21 million people, that E! unveiled the first details of its new reality series, saying would would “tell [Jenner’s] intimate story” and search for her “new normal” over eight, one-hour episodes, debuting July 26.

The first trailer for I Am Cait was not released until June 3, after Jenner introduced herself as Caitlyn in an interview with Vanity Fair magazine. A few week later, I Am Cait was unveiled to the public and clocked 3.9 million total viewers, with 2.3 million of them in the 18-49 demo in Live + 3 Day viewing. That made it the most watched unscripted series start in the demo in all of cable TV for this calendar year, as well as E!’s biggest launch in the age bracket in more than a decade.  In today’s announcement, Jenner said she is looking forward to continuing the first-season’s conversation.
