Police Shooting Event Series Casts Sanaa Lathan As Lead, Eyes Greenlight At Fox

Fox Broadcasting Co. is prepping an event series from Love & Basketball filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood and Empire executive producer Brian Grazer.

Gina Prince-Bythewood HeadshotReggie Rock Bythewood HeadshotLove & Basketball star Sanaa Lathan has been cast as the lead in the project, which examines the dangerous aftermath of a police shooting when an African-American cop kills a white teen in Tennessee. The untitled drama (aka Indictment) had been in development at Fox for a while. A pilot script has been completed, which the network has followed up by ordering a bible with the intention of picking up the project straight to series once the bible is delivered.

The untitled Gina Prince-Bythewood event series, from 20th Century Fox TV and studio-based Imagine Television, will star Lathan as an expert investigator who digs into the police shooting case, alongside a special prosecutor sent to the town by the Department of Justice. The pair must navigate the media attention, public debate and the social unrest that comes with such a volatile case as they seek justice before the divided town erupts in a race war.

The project is written and executive produced by Prince-Bythewood and Reggie Rock Bythewood, with Prince-Bythewood set to direct. Imagine’s Grazer and Francie Calfo also will serve as executive producers.

Police shootings have been a raw topic, with several recent cases of white cops killing unarmed black men triggering unrest and nationwide campaigns against racial profiling and excessive police force.

Lathan, who got her breakout starring turn on Prince-Bythewood’s Love & Basketball, is coming off a lead role in the feature thriller The Perfect Guy, which opened at No. 1 at the box office last month. She next will be seen in Now You See Me 2, the sequel to the 2013 thriller. She also is set to star in and exec produce the upcoming feature adaptation of Omar Tyree’s best-selling young adult Flyy Girl trilogy and recently wrapped production on the indie sci-fi feature Ad Inexplorata.

Lathan is repped by ICM and Stephen Barnes. Prince-Bythewood and Bythewood are repped by CAA and attorneys Gordon M. Bobb and Nina Shaw. Imagine TV is repped by CAA.
