John Woo To Exec Produce Neo-Noir Series ‘Cognition’ – Mipcom

UK-based Catalyst Global Media is partnering with John Woo and his team in Los Angeles on crime thriller Cognition. The eight-part series is based on an original idea by Alex Garcia Lopez (Utopia, Misfits). He is writing and will direct with production beginning in 2016.

Described as a neo-noir, Cognition will follow two serial killer investigations set in stylistically contrasting worlds — the vast and desolate lands of America’s declining Midwest, and the thriving and overpopulated streets of the Far East.

The story is centered on Travis Augustine, an American ex-detective who has traveled to Asia for a cutting-edge, untested medical procedure to cure his cancer. The theory is that trauma manifests itself into illness. The cure is to delete the memories associated with the trauma. As part of his treatment, Travis recounts memories from a failed, all-consuming 10-year serial killer investigation. When copycat crimes start to take place on the streets of an Asian metropolis, Travis finds himself pulled back into the vicious cycle he’s trying to escape.

Woo will executive produce with longtime producing partner Terence Chang and SVP Lori Tilkin. The Killer, Face/Off and Mission: Impossible III helmer recently returned to directing in China with epic passion project The Crossing I & II.

Catalyst, founded by Charlotte Walls and Al Hardiman, most recently executive produced Peter & Wendy for ITV.
