‘The Walking Dead’ Season 6 Review: AMC Blockbuster Gets Jolt Of New Life

The biggest show on television is back, and for its sixth season The Walking Dead has, as my video review above says, decided to go large and stay home. Debuting on October 11 on AMC, the latest installment of the zombie apocalypse finds Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes and other survivors firmly in command of the Alexandria Safe Zone and its residents after the bloody ending of last season.

Deadline Review Badge Dominic PattenBut all is not well in the suburban oasis, and those threats, both external and internal, spread the seeds for what looks like a Season 6 that bring TWD an extra jolt – which, as much as the series stays focused and re-invents as it has most seasons, is a surprising and welcome reinvigoration of a blockbuster that I didn’t think even needed it. A surprise in a season that looks to be full of such surprises – and power struggles.

The 90-minute season opener of the series based on Robert Kirkman’s comics introduces some of those surprises as it moves back and forth from flashbacks to the present day and the decisions and actions characters have and are taking. Just so you know fans, there is a lot of action from the beginning, and a lot of Walkers die. But there is also a lot of reflection in the premiere, written by Scott Gimple and Matt Negrate and directed by Greg Nicotero. In fact, with Lennie James’ Morgan as its moral compass, this season starts much more meditative in many ways than the previous season as Grimes, Daryl, Carol, Michonne, the other survivors and the residents of the Safe Zone attempt to discover the crossroads between living and just surviving in this insane world. It’s a tone that actually feels very much in sync with companion series Fear The Walking Dead, which ends its first season October 4.

So take a look at my video review of Season 6. We know millions of you will be watching on October 11 but we’d love to know what you think of the review and the show.
