‘Pitch Perfect 3’ Changes Its Performance Date To August 2017

Universal’s Pitch Perfect 3 will be taking over the August 4, 2017 slot left vacant by Legendary’s Pacific Rim 2. Originally the chick choir pic was to be released on July 21, 2017. Currently, the Anna Kendrick-Rebel Wilson threequel remains unopposed by any wide entries.

Pitch Perfect 3 is produced by Paul Brooks of Gold Circle Entertainment and Max Handelman & Elizabeth Banks of Brownstone Productions. Kay Cannon returns to write the third installment. Pitch Perfect 2 was quite the surprise this summer, kicking Warner Bros’ Mad Max: Fury Road in the inseam and stealing away No. 1 with a $69.2M opening and a final global gross of $285.2M. Uni began stoking exhibitors at CinemaCon in April with an early screening of the Banks-directed sequel. The first frame of August has been the last huzzah for many studios before grosses dwindle throughout the month and kids head back to school. Disney-Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy debuted in that frame and holds the record as the month’s highest opener with $94.3M.

Pacific Rim 2, which has been reported previously in the press, is currently delayed to allow the filmmakers more time to work on the project. The film is a sequel to the 2013 monsters vs. rock-em-sock-em robots film which made $411M and was directed and written by Guillermo del Toro. Uni plans to release Pacific Rim 2 worldwide in 3D and Imax.
