ABC Buys Car Dealership Comedy From ‘Benched’ Co-Creator & Annie Mumolo

In a competitive situation, ABC has bought Wheeler Dealer, a half-hour comedy pitch from Benched co-creator Damon Jones, with Bridesmaids co-writer Annie Mumolo.

Wheeler Dealer (not to be confused with the fictional Wheelin’ Dealin’ record label on ABC drama Nashville) is inspired by the true story of Jones’ sister, a suburban housewife and mother who inherits her deceased husband’s struggling car dealership in rural West Texas — Friday Night Lights country. In an attempt to make a fresh start, she moves her family out of their plush gated community to run the business, something she knows nothing about.

Groundlings alum Jones will write and executive produce. Mumolo and Tim Lovestedt also executive produce, along with Thruline Television’s JB Roberts and Willie Mercer. ABC Studios is the studio.

Both Jones and Mumolo come from performing backgrounds and have collaborated with Saturday Night Live alums: Jones co-created Benched with Michaela Watkins, and Mumolo co-wrote Bridesmaids with Kristen Wiig.

Jones is repped by UTA, Thruline and attorney Patti Felker. Mumolo — who co-wrote the new David O. Russell movie Joy starring Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro — and Lovestedt are repped by UTA, Thruline and attorney Karl Austen.
