Whitey Bulger Shoots Back At The ‘Maze Runner’ Gang At Weekday Box Office

Warner Bros.’ Whitey Bulger gangster film Black Mass, despite being the No. 2 movie last weekend with $22.6M, has ruled No. 1 at the weekday B.O. from Monday through Wednesday, beating last weekend’s champ Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials from 20th Century Fox. A lot of this has to do with the time of year: The under-25 bunch is busy at school or college and relegate moviegoing to the weekend, while adults flock to cinemas gradually.

Tuesday was the highest weekday for both Black Mass and Scorch Trials, which respectively took in $2.7M and $2.5M, because it’s discount day. On Monday, Black Mass hit $2.1M to Scorch Trials’ $1.67M while on Wednesday the duo respectively generated $1.97M to $1.7M. One industry estimate pegs Black Mass winning No. 1 again tonight by a hair. Bulger has marked his top neighborhoods at the B.O. in Beantown, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco. Through yesterday, Black Mass counts $29.5M while the Dylan O’Brien headliner has bagged $36.2M. This weekend, the anticipation is that Black Mass will decline 50% from its opening to $13M with Scorch Trials falling 46%-50% to $15.1M-$16.4M. Hotel Transylvania 2 will dominate with $32M, possibly as much as $40M, while Warner Bros.’ other new entry The Intern is looking attractive to older females with $15M-$20M. Universal’s expansion of Everest from 545 Imax and PLF locations to 3,004 sites, inclusive of 2-D, should peak at $15M. Through six days, Everest‘s domestic cume sits at $9.4M. Blumhouse/Tilt-Universal-High Top’s opening for The Green Inferno is estimated to be at $3M-$4M.
