‘Furious 7’ Puts The Pedal To The Metal In Home Entertainment Market

Universal’s Furious 7 isn’t out of gas. Though the film has finished its theatrical run, becoming the fifth highest grossing film worldwide at $1.5 billion, Universal is reporting that the domestic home entertainment spend for the seventh-quel is at $52.5M across both physical and digital formats.  To date that figure reps 15% of Furious 7‘s $351M domestic box office, the latter of which was spurred by an enormous social media campaign supported by the film’s cast; two of them — Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson — being skyscrapers in the SMU. As you can see below, Johnson continues to champion the film to his Twitter followers:

In its first week of release since hitting store shelves on September 25, Furious 7 sold roughly 2.5M units on Blu-ray and DVD. Uni reports that on both the physical and the digital front, Furious 7 is the franchise’s biggest-selling release to date and is pacing to be the studio’s highest-grossing live-action home entertainment release ever.

Stunts employed for F7 post theatrical release include a global press event in Abu Dhabi with Tyrese Gibson as well as this past weekend’s NASCAR Sprint Cup race in Chicago, with Chris (Ludacris) Bridges serving as Grand Marshal.  There was also a partnership with navigation app WAZE. With a campaign entitled “Get your Furious 7 Fix Fast”, Waze users in seven cities – Chicago, Dallas, Portland, OR,  New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington D.C., — were given clues to find Prizing Pit Stops giving away free Furious 7 merchandise.

Furious 7 shattered records around the world at the box office and continues to reach incredible heights in home entertainment, an extraordinary achievement for the seventh installment of any franchise,” said UPHE President Eddie Cunningham in a statement. “Such astonishing results in both theatrical and home entertainment are a true testament to the enduring appeal of The Fast and the Furious films and underscore the strong demand amongst both physical and digital consumers to have instant access to one of the year’s greatest must-own movies.”

During Cinemacon in April, Vin Diesel took the stage to announce that Fast & Furious 8 will hit theaters on April 14, 2017.
