‘Angry Birds Movie’ Trailer: Sony’s Avians-Vs-Pigs Saga Takes Ire To New Levels

Unless you’ve been off the grid since 2009, you probably are overfamiliar with Angry Birds, the so-simplistic game app that clinical studies have proved to be more addictive that opium. Well, probably. Now, finally, we get the first peek at Sony’s feature adaptation of the Finnish feathered friends that has been in the works since the first Obama administration.

The Angry Birds Movie stars Jason Sudeikis as Red, an easily irked avian who, well, gets angry early and often times. Josh Gad slingshots in as the yellow bird Chuck, alongside a voice cast that also includes a pair of newly minted second-Emmy winners — Tony Hale and Peter Dinklage — Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Kate McKinnon, Tony Hale and Keegan-Michael Key. Bill Hader is Leonard, a minion pig; note that the porkers get shortshrift in this trailer.

Angry Birds pigsThere’s not much plot revealed here, more like one ire-inducing incident after another amid pop hits by Michael Jackson and The Carpenters. But make no mistake: These birds are pissed. A yoga teacher tries to calm them — “We gonna be working on managing our anger through movement” — but, doggone it, stuff happens. The helming gig went to first-timers Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly, who both have two decades worth of animating credits. The Simpsons alum Jon Vitti wrote the pic, which Angry Birds creator Rovio Entertainment produced with Sony Pictures Imageworks. The Columbia film is Sony’s first summer play of 2016, opening May 20.

Have a look and tell us what you think — if you can pull yourself away from the app long enough.
