In a world … where trailers don’t start with “In a world…,” we have the second look at the Steven Spielberg-directed Bridge Of Spies. Tom Hanks stars as James Donovan, a Brooklyn insurance lawyer who risked it all by defending top Soviet spy Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance) at the height of the Cold War and later was tapped by the U.S. government to negotiate a swap for downed American U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers (Austin Stowell). “Do you know how people will look at us — the family of the man trying to free a traitor?” his wife (Amy Ryan) asks at the dinner table. Indeed, many are not happy with Donovan and the job with which he is tasked. Scott Shepherd, Sebastian Koch and Alan Alda also star.
The trailer centers on a story Abel recounts to Donovan about his father’s friend who was beaten repeatedly by border guards. “Every time they hit him, he stood back up again,” the Soviet says. “They hit him harder — still he got back to his feet.” Asks Donovan, “And I remind you of him?” Abel replies, simply, “Standing man.”
Matt Charman and Joel Coen & Ethan Coen wrote the screenplay for the film, which Spielberg also produced with Marc Platt and Kristie Macosko Krieger. DreamWorks Pictures/Fox 2000 Pictures’ Bridge Of Spies opens October 16. Have a look and tell us what you think.
