‘Extant’ Finale Ratings Fall From 2014, ‘Carmichael’ Matches Last ‘Mr. Robinson’, ‘ANTM’ & ‘Home Free’ Rise

With the new television season looming and the NFL season about to formally kick-off tonight, Wednesday saw a lot of summer shows wrapping things up. In what can best be summed up as Battle of the Mollys, Extant (0.7/3) ended its second season with a 2-hour finale. While up a solid 17% among adults 18-49 from last week’s 1-hour show, the Halle Berry sci-fi thriller crash landed 30% from its Season 1 ender on September 17 last year.

Now, it must be noted that the 2014 finale was a 10 – 11 PM show and not 9 – 11 PM like last night. Also, the Season 1 finale also only had a Criminal Minds repeat as lead-in, unlike last night’s Extant, which had Big Brother (2.1/8; even with last week), the top rated show of Wednesday’s primetime. No word yet on if Extant is coming back for a third season but with wobbly ratings this season and that 67% demo drop from its lead-in last night, it’s got to be leaning towards unlikely.

NBC had two shows ending their run on Wednesday with a double dose of The Carmichael Show at 9 PM (1.0/4) and 9:30 PM (0.9/3) and Last Comic Standing (1.1/4). The 10 PM latter dipped 8% from its September 2 show and fell 21% from its 2-hour Season 8 ender of August 14, 2014. As for Carmichael, the short-term comedy was down 17% and 18% from last week. However, of note to NBC execs, those demo results are an exact match for what the net’s other Wednesday 3-week double dose summer comedy Mr. Robinson drew for its August 19 finale  – which was an OK run for both shows. NBC are also happy that Carmichael Show’s 9 PM episode was the most watched Week 3 summer comedy in 11 years on all the nets with 4.7 million tuning in. Whether that means more Carmichael, no indication yet.

Bopping up 6% among the 18-49s, America’s Got Talent (1.8/7) was the most watched show of the night with an audience of 9.34 million and hence NBC won the night viewershipwise with a total of 5.994 million. However, the Comcast-owned net was even with Fox when it came to the key demo for the night with both getting a 1.3/5. Down to a final four, MasterChef (1.5/6) was even with last week but the S1 finale of Home Free (1.1/4) saw a 10% rise.

A much bigger rise was had by America’s Next Top Model (0.6/2), which jumped 50% over it September 2 show. That’s the best the Tyra Banks series has done in the key demo since cycle 20 premiere back on August 2, 2013. A Wicked Offer (0.2/1) did not benefit from its lead-in’s success. The newbie remained even with last week to match a low, in preliminary numbers.

ABC was all encores on Wednesday.
