Based on the multiple award-winning novel by Emma Donoghue, Room follows a 5-year-old boy, “Jack,” who lives with his mother, “Ma,” in a single cramped room which, he believes, constitutes the entire world. As it turns out however, Ma was kidnapped seven years earlier by a twisted sexual predator Jack knows only as “Old Nick,” who has raped and terrorized Ma ever since. When Ma devises a daring escape plan that depends on sneaking Jack out into a world he didn’t even realize existed, the two face enormous difficulties integrating and reintegrating with the world stolen from them.
Heavy stuff, as you can see from the official trailer. Directed by Lenny Abrahamson from a script by Donoghue, it stars Brie Larson as Ma, Jacob Tremblay as Jack, along with Joan Allen, Sean Bridgers, and William H. Macy. Ed Guiney and David Gross produce. Room made its world premiere last week at Telluride, and will be shown in the Special Presentation category at Toronto. This will be followed by a limited release starting October 16, followed by a November 6 wide release.
