‘Our Brand Is Crisis’ Trailer: Cynical Politics, Suicidal Llama

Based on the 2005 documentary of the same name, Our Brand Is Crisis portrays a fictionalized account of the highly contentious 2002 Bolivian presidential election in which American consulting firm Greenberg Carville Shrum was brought in to apply techniques used stateside to secure the election of Gonzalo Sánchez de Lozada over socialist candidate Evo Morales. Sandra Bullock stars as ‘Calamity’ Jane Bodine, a consultant who retired after a humiliating professional setback who is brought in by GCS to head up operations in Bolivia. Billy Bob Thornton co-stars as Bullock’s nemesis Pat Candy, who works for the opposing campaign. Scoot McNairy, Anthony Mackie, and Ann Dowd also star, along with Joaquim de Almeida as Pedro Gallo, a fictionalized version of de Lozada.

In the first trailer, we see Bullock’s Bodine grappling with the moral ambiguities of campaigning for Gallo, some heavy black comedy, and plenty of foreshadowing for what may come. (In real life, de Lozada was forced into exile the year after winning election, when his response to widespread protests against his economic policies turned deadly.)

David Gordon Green directs from a script by Peter Straughan. Smokehouse Pictures’ principals Grant Heslov and George Clooney produce, along with Bullock and Stuart Besser, with Participant Media’s Jeff Skoll and Jonathan King executive producing. The film has its world premiere as part of the Special Presentations section at the upcoming Toronto Film Festival, and Warner Bros will release it on Halloween weekend.
