‘Doctor Who’ Revives River Song; Alex Kingston To Appear In Christmas Special

Shooting begins this week on the Doctor Who Christmas special 2015. The 11th special is reaching back in time to revive Professor River Song. Alex Kingston, who made her first appearance on the show in 2008, will return in the role. The special is penned by lead writer Steven Moffat and is set on a future Christmas Day with the TARDIS parked on a snowy village street, covered in icicles, awaiting its next adventure.

Enter time traveller River Song, who meets her husband’s new incarnation, in the form of Peter Capaldi, for the first time. The character made her first Doctor Who appearance in “Silence In The Library” and “Forest Of The Dead” and has appeared in 15 episodes to date.

Says Moffatt, “The last time the Doctor saw her she was a ghost. The first time he met her, she died. So how can he be seeing her again? As ever, with the most complicated relationship in the universe, it’s a matter of time …”

There’s more guest-casting to come for the holiday episode. The regular season of Doctor Who begins on BBC America on September 19.
